How Kalshi sports markets work
Sports markets are by far the most active category on Kalshi, making up the large majority of its trading volume. If you are coming from a sportsbook, the mechanics will feel both familiar and refreshingly different.
Here is how they work.
A sports contract is still Yes/No
A sports market is the same event contract as everything else on Kalshi: a Yes/No question (for example, will a given team win) that pays $1 if correct and $0 if not. The price is the market-implied probability, not a bookmaker's line.
Exchange, not sportsbook
The crucial difference from a sportsbook is that there is no house setting odds with a built-in margin. You trade against other people at prices the market sets, and you can buy or sell at any time, including mid-game. There is no fixed vig baked into the line; instead you pay small trading fees.
Live trading and fast books
During live games, prices move fast as the game unfolds, and short-lived mispricings appear and vanish in seconds. This is one of the few times a quick (market) order earns its cost, because speed can matter more than the spread. Just be aware that fast markets can also be thin between plays.
What to watch for
Liquidity varies a lot by event: marquee games have deep books and tight spreads, while obscure matchups can be thin and slippage-prone. Always check the order book depth before sizing up, and read the resolution rules so you know exactly how the market settles, including overtime and postponement handling.
